After completing 187+ SEO projects for small businesses, I had a chance to go back and look over all the data and ask questions. One of my favorite questions to ask is:
How are top performing firms driving the most traffic to their sites?
Here’s what I learned:
Answer Specific Questions That Your Target Customer Has Via Your Blog
Is that too simple? Maybe, but it works. Here’s an example:
Most Firms

Most small professional firms see about 300 clicks via search over a 3 month period. About 100 per month.
Looking at all the firms that I’ve worked with, a few had almost 10x the amount of clicks as everyone else. What was it that they were doing that was driving all this traffic to their site?
Firms With 10x SEO Strategy

If you know who your target customer is, then you can build content to answer their questions.
This firm is a financial advisory firm and they wrote specifically about the benefits plans at two local companies. As a result, employees from those companies just happened to be asking Google questions such as “Stock options at XYZ company.” Building content to answer questions in this area drives 10 times the amount of search volume compared to “Financial Advisor near me.”
Does that make sense?
It all depends on how humans are using technology to answer questions. If you’re a financial advisor, people haven’t decided they want you to answer their questions. They ask google first, then you have the opportunity to prove yourself as an expert.
